Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy may help restore function and improve quality of life for individuals that have been or undergoing treatments for cancer. The focus of physiotherapy is to help manage pain and symptoms, then to help individuals with self-management. Forms of treatment may include:

  • Hands-on manual therapy
  • Dry needling
  • Exercise prescription and education

Lymphoedema Therapy

Lymphoedema (a type of swelling) is a common complication of cancer treatment. Lymphoedema therapy focuses on empowering patients to manage their chronic condition. Treatment may include:

  • Prevention and assessment
  • Compression, bandaging and compression garment prescription
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Scar management

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) may have an impact on the pelvic floor causing incontinence, urgency, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction. Benefits of pelvic floor physiotherapy include:

  • Decreased incontinence and urgency issues
  • Promote sexual function
  • Minimized pelvic tissue changes related to radiotherapy

Oncology Massage

Oncology massage is a specialized area of massage which is slower and gentler that is specifically catered for those living with cancer, recently diagnosed and those with a history of cancer. The benefits may include:

  • Reduced pain
  • Decreased anxiety and stress
  • Relief from nausea and fatigue
  • Improved sleep

Acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is an effective and safe treatment option to help manage numerous symptoms that may be associated with cancer treatments such as:

  • Pain and fatigue
  • Xerostomia (dry mouth)
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Insomnia, anxiety, stress and depression

 

Exercise

Cancer treatments and extended bed rest can lead to a decrease in muscle and energy levels. Having a personalized exercise program has many benefits including:

  • Improved strength
  • Reduced fatigue
  • Improved cancer treatment completion rates
  • Improved quality of life
