Respiratory Physiotherapy

Respiratory physiotherapy has many potential benefits for people with chronic respiratory conditions.

  • Reduce shortness of breath
  • Clear secretions thoroughly and with less effort
  • Treat continence issues related to a chronic cough
  • Improve fitness and endurance through a tailored exercise program

Respiratory physiotherapy is suitable for people with most respiratory conditions, especially those that require regular clearance of airway secretions or experience shortness of breath:

  • Bronchiectasis
  • Lung infection/ Pneumonia
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis/interstitial lung disease

We incorporate a variety of airway clearance techniques into respiratory physiotherapy including:

  • Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT)
  • Bubble PEP (positive expiratory pressure)
  • PariPEP
  • Flutter/oscillating PEP/Acapella
  • Huffing/ Forced Expiratory technique (FET)

It is now widely recognised that appropriate exercise is integral to the management of respiratory conditions.   Exercise is tailored to your needs and will help improve your endurance and muscle strength, as well as reduce breathlessness, so you're better able to carry out daily activities, resulting in improved quality of life.
